Story: Justina Gringyte stars in the first revival of Calixto Bieito's acclaimed production of Bizet's fiery opera, broadcast live in stunning HD.
Young solider Jose is so entranced by sultry gypsy temptress Carmen (Justina Gringyte) that he deserts the army. But Carmen subsequently falls for glamorous, dashing toreador Escamillo. Arguably the world's most popular opera, Bizet's red-blooded depiction of lust and tragedy scandalised early audiences. First staged at the London Coliseum in 2012, Catalan director Calixto Bieito's fresh, bold and hugely acclaimed production updates the setting to the dying days of Franco's Spain. In Bieito's 'Carmen', those gorgeous melodies and red hot Spanish rhythms soundtrack a steamy battle of the sexes fought out in the evocative arena of the Spanish bullring. Mezzo soprano Justina Gringyte makes her ENO role debut as Carmen in this revival of a staging that was hailed by The Guardian as "intelligent, persuasive and intense".
